If
a cargo absolutely has to be there, regardless of what
or WHO it is, then Bean Bandit is your man. If you need
a fast getaway car for your latest heist, then the Road
Buster is your best bet. The anti-hero of Gunsmith Cats
fame is here in his own adventure as he breaks, shatters,
and absolutely mangles every traffic law, (and police
cars) in this one-shot OAV.
After
driving the getaway car for a robbery, the Road Buster
is hired to deliver the daughter of a wealthy businessman
back home for 50 grand. Simple enough right? Not really,
since Bean Bandit doesn't know that he's being set up
to take the rap for a kidnapping, while the crooks are
making off with a 2 million dollar ransom! However,
the bad guys, (and I use that term loosely since we
can't call Bean an angel either), will soon learn that
nobody messes with the Road Buster! He's going to grind
them into the asphalt and get that 2 million plus interest...
the lives of those who framed him!
The
car chases are intense, the auto repair bills are skyrocketing
and Bean Bandit is at the top of the Police Wanted List,
(as if he wasn't already at the top). However, is Bean
concerned? Nope. He's more concerned about that ransom
and what to have for dinner, rather than how many cops
are after him.
To
put it simply, the Bean Bandit OAV is just simple, mindless
violence and gratuitous action. It doesn't promise any
in-depth plot or character development, so don't look
for any. Just about any viewer could catch on to the
storyline, though a lot of Gunsmith Cats fans will gripe
a bit on how different Rally Vincent is, compared to
her manga counterpart or the version made by ADV Films.
The anime hovers just on the borders of reality with
Bean's customized car, bullet-proof clothing, inhuman
strength and the chase scenes, but it still delivers
the goods of a solid adventure in under one hour. The
animation is fluid, though a bit less refined than what
is depicted in today's anime. Overall, it's a decent
way to spend 60 minutes. The DVD is available from Animeigo.
