Magic Knight Rayearth is an anime that almost any anime fan will be familiar with, but supposing that you are unfamiliar with this masterpiece, I will explain just why it is the PERFECT anime to watch.

To start with, the storyline starts out typical with the "Earth people taken to another world where only THEY can solve the problem/bad situation!" and, the villains are also quite run of the mill, with the brooding dark lord, insane child, sultry sorceress and buxom bimbo. Thrown into the mix, an extremely cute princess is kindapped - and the focus of the girls is to become Magic Knights and ressurect ancient Rune Gods to rescue this Princess.

However - soon, you realise this isn't a run of the mill anime. The Dark Lord Zagato isn't so dark after all, the Sultry Sorceress has reasons of her own for being so insane, the insane child has reasons for lashing out against the people of the land, and even the buxom bimbo has her motives for siding with Zagato.

The three main characters, Umi, Hikaru and Fuu all fit into stereotypes, however they are developed excellently. Hikaru is the super-energetic and strongest of the group who is essentially the hero, whilst the selfish and headstrong Umi, as well as the bookish, well meaning Fuu play an excellent second fiddle to her. But as the series develops, we see that these girls all have their own goals to achieve, people to protect and reasons for wanting to become Magic Knights.

The art, by CLAMP (Cardcaptor Sakura, X/1999 and Tokyo Babylon) is superb, with the typical wide eyed, stick thin characters and femenine looking tough guys! Plus, this show houses some of the most incredible attack scenes ever (especially Ascot's Summoning Spell, and Fuu's Emerald Typhoon!)
There are novel twists in this show - and the appearance of some truly cool mecha! This show combines the magical cuteness of Sailor Moon with the super powered mecha action of Gundam Wing. Truly an anime for everyone - this is a show to be watched and rewatched! Buy it on DVD or you'll wear it out!
