Overview:
In
the near future, the age of the Internet has brought
about the invention of the "Persocon" - mechanical
humanoids (mostly female) that serve a variety of functions,
from being a personal digital assistant, to doing housework.
Poverty-stricken Hideki Motosuwa can barely put himself
through cram school, much less afford a Persocon. Luck
shines on him one day, however, as he finds one discarded
in the trash. But having a Persocon as strange (and
as cute) as "Chii" may be more than he's able
to handle.
Some
Characters of Note:
 Hideki
Motosuwa: An 18-year old ronin (student attempting
to get into university), Hideki comes from a family
of farmers who have lived off of the land. However,
in Hideki's quest to attend a good university and
be a success, he moves to the city, where he dreams
of, among other things, having a Persocon of his
own. Hideki's slightly perverted nature and ignorance
about technology gets him in trouble a bit, but
he is otherwiwse a hard-working young man who wants
to realize his dreams.

 Chii:
A Persocon who was, for unknown reasons, discarded
in the trash, Chii is named for the only word that
she is able to speak at first ("chii",
of course). Hideki finds her and brings her home,
whereupon she immediately attaches herself to him
when she is turned on. While Chii may look like
a normal Persocon on the outside, Hideki soon discovers
that she possesses qualities that are not normal
- qualities that baffle even Hideki's friends who
are self-proclaimed Persocon experts. This oddity
is part of Chii's true nature, something that even
Chii herself does not know.

 Chitose
Hibiya:
A sugary sweet person in appearance, Chitose is
the apartment manager of the complex that Hideki
stays in. She seems to be a bright, cheerful person,
and Hideki takes an immediate liking (and also physical
attraction) to her. Chitose seems to be always looking
out for her tenants, and even offers to help them
when they seem in need of something. Though Hideki
fears that Chitose may make an incorrect assumption
about his living situation with Chii, Chitose doesn't
seem to mind, and even befriends the Persocon.

Minoru
Kokubunji: A young boy by appearance, Minoru
is actually one of the foremost Persocon experts
(and a wealthy one, at that). Minoru's talents
at knowing the inner workings of a Persocon are
so extensive that he is able to make his own custom
Persocons, each with their own function and personality.
Hideki first hears about him from a friend, and
takes Chii to go see him. But even Minoru cannot
completely figure out the true nature of Chii
and her unique makeup as a Persocon, and his interest
in Chii causes him to extend a hand of friendship
to Hideki.
