"One
of the reasons animation is a highly used media in Japan
is its versatility. The budget for general effects isn't
as limited, because reality is already suspended through
the use of animation. Instead of special equipment,
props, and techniques, an animator needs only pens and
paints. As a result, animation becomes an excellent
and inexpensive media for telling stories beyond normal
physical existances, especially within the genres of
horror and science-fiction. An early short film to capitalize
on such advantages is Baoh, produced by Youmex around
the same time as the release of Akira. A disturbing
violent spectacle, Baohis moderately tempered by heroism
and fear, keeping it from becomeing a pointlessly grotesque
vision..."
