Akira, known by many as the grandfather of anime. My opinion is that this movie definitely deserves that title. The idea isn't very original, and yet in some ways it is. This anime is very gruesome and tragic, and it still is one of the best.So, what? It doesn't matter that the animation isnt that great, its still an enjoyable movie. I got used to the way it was drawn after a good while, so I isn't that much of a big deal. The animation isn't the worst, but I think that animation shouldn't affect much of its overall rating anyway..."

A monstrous manga, both in size and popularity. Also one of the key releases in the mid-90s. Unfortunately, two hours was definitely not long enough to fit the 5-volume manga Akira. Still, although it is obviously lacking on many levels, Katsuhiro Otomo's epic Akira holds together quite well as a full-length movie, if a little unhinged..."

Akira continues to be proclaimed a masterpiece by anime fans throughout North America, and when I look at when it was produced and premiered, I can understand the fanfare it receives. However, in comparison with anime of the late '90s and the 21st century, it no longer stands out. It does remain a high quality and ground breaking work, but it is no longer uncharted territory, and can be held up against other similar works such as Evangelion and Lain..."
