Looks like Viz has started a trend with their re-release of Maison Ikkoku. Takahashi's other series, Inu-Yasha and Ranma 1/2, are also being re-released in a new format and look for your reading pleasure.

The Big Apple Anime Fest is holding the regional finals of "Anime Idol", a contest pitting aspiring anime voice actors against one another. At stake is an actual dub voice acting contract! Regional finals are being held at Anime Boston (already past), Anime Central (this week!) and Otakon. You can check the Anime Idol Rules and Form for more details.

Among other series, ADV has secured the licensing rights to the ultra-cute Azumanga Daioh (from which our current news image comes from).

-Anime Central in May! (4/27/03) -
Anime Central, one of the largest conventions in the country for anime and manga, is on May 16-18th. AnimeInfo.org staffers Frank, Asuka, Misato, CarrotMuncher, and Shouryu will all be working at it, so be sure to show up if you're able!

-Anime Boston Fills to Capacity (4/21/03) -
In an unprecendented move for anime conventions, the inaugural Anime Boston event got so full that it had to turn away eager anime and manga fans, drawing over 4000 people for the weekend! Way to go folks!

-Renewal Of Evangelion (4/21/03) -
Various sources report that a project to bring back Neon Genesis Evangelion is underway, involving a re-mastering of the original footage, new merchandise, and more.

Anime Central, a convention that some AnimeInfo.org staff work for, now has the ACen convention forums open. Frank and Asuka are helping run the forums, so if you're attending, be sure to register and post!

-Bebopping Into Theatres (4/8/03) -
The Cowboy Bebop movie premiered in select theatres all over the US this past weekend, including the Music Box Theatre in Chicago. This summer will see the release of the Bebop movie on DVD as well.

Anime News Network reports that the official RahXephon website has confirmed a movie release which will follow in the continuity of the TV series.

Sakura-Con, scheduled to take place this weekend in Seattle, has regretfully had to announce the cancellation of two of its Japanese guests of honor (singer Yoko Ishida and voice actress Maria Yamamoto) due to concerns over the war in Iraq.

The New England area's Anime Boston convention has secured Mr. Hiroki Kanno as the Japanese Guest of Honor at Anime Boston 2003. Mr. Kanno can be best recognized recently as the character designer for the RahXephon series.

-Chobits for the Office (3/16/03) -
The new Chobits box and first DVD is out from Pioneer, with a nice Stationary set for your practical office-type needs. The set comes in a small, flat case and is compact enough to carry most places.

Anime News Network reports that Maison Ikkoku, long held in stasis by Viz Video, will begin coming out again (this time in DVD format) in a series of boxed sets containing remastered episodes this summer.

Anime on DVD has found that starting March 17th, the action anime series Rurouni Kenshin will be airing on Cartoon Network's Toonami block, joining G-Gundam, Dragonball Z, and Yu Yu Hakusho.

-Anime Central Guest Update! (2/16/03) -
Anime Central, the Midwest's largest anime convention, has updated their guest listing, adding Hiroaki Gohda (character designer for Onegai Teacher, Director/Storyboarder for the Ah! My Goddess! OAV's), Kazuyoshi Katayama (Director of The Big O), Monica Rial (dub VA - Hyatt in Excel Saga), and Chris Patton (dub VA - Kamina Ayato in Rahxephon).

-Viz Pulls the Switch (2/10/03) -
AnimeInfo.org Board regular and staffer KasumiTen reports that Viz Video has switched distributors from Pioneer to Ventura (which handles Tokyopop, Media Blasters, and Central Park Media distribution as well). Online buyers may see a 5-10% decrease in merchandise costs as a result, though overall impact will be minimal.

In a leap of faith, AnimeNation, the popular anime/manga vendor, has decided to try their hand at the anime series release market by licensing the lesser-known "Risky Safety" show.

-Rurouni Kenshin New OAV Release Date Announced (1/5/03) -
Anime News Service reports that the last of the Rurouni Kenshin OAV's, entitled "Samurai X: Reflection", will be out in March 2003 from ADV.
