Miaka Yuki is the main character in the Fushigi Yugi series, and the one who is both the most changed and the biggest changer of character in it. Miaka's journey through the world of the book, and her experiences of hardship, drama, and romance help her to "grow up" in a way and accept responsibility for her actions. Miaka's rather klutzy nature, her inability to focus on school, and her obsession for food are all things that work against her in this. In the course of the series, Miaka learns to temper these desires and nature with a sense of reality and awareness of the world around her.

Miaka first enters the world of the book when she reluctantly accepts Yui's offer to go with her while she returns a library book. Sidetracked by the food and drink in the vending machines, Miaka waits in the lobby, and catches sight of a beautifulr red bird going towards the archives. When her and Yui reach the room, they encounter nothing but the book called the "Universe of the Four Gods", and when they open it, are sucked into the book world. While Yui is sucked back into the real world right away, Miaka is forced to stay in it, and tries to track down Tamahome, who had saved her and Yui from bandits. Eventually, she ends up at the palace of Hotohori, the emperor of the region, and accepts the responsibility of being the Priestess of Suzaku in order to get home.

Miaka's rather klutzy and odd nature catches both friend and enemy off guard at times. However, her charm and looks end up changing many of the characters in the Fushigi Yugi story. Drawing off of aspects in her behavior, the Suzaku Seven and even some of their enemies, the Seiryu Seven, are influenced by her, both in the positive and negative. Tamahome is especially affected, and because the two love each other, Miaka sets up another dilemma of the series, as Tamahome's nature as a character conflicts with what is best for both the world of the book and the real world. So while Miaka's journey is definitely a long one that takes her all over the territory being fought over, meeting people and learning from them. While Miaka doesn't claim to be very powerful, she still nevertheless is a very determined individual who shows her powers as the Priestess of Suzaku at times in order to defeat her opponents.
